Welcome

We invite you to experience the wonderful West Bank Golf Club

Perched on the seacoast edge in the West Bank Area of East London, the course has mostly ocean views overlooked by the  towering West Bank Light House,  the emblem of the West Bank Golf Club.

Play your Game of Golf or host your event against this beautiful  oceanic backdrop. One of the few Golf Clubs with such breath taking views of the edge of the wild coast region.

A Brief History

West Bank Golf Club, founded by W.M. Jackson, D. Iverach, R.R. Scott, D. Russell and J. Muller was opened in 1907 and consisted of a 9 hole course with Kimberley blue gravel putting greens approximately 5m in diameter. The first club house was built in 1920 with the newer, still existing, clubhouse being built in 1939

The course remained as 9 holes until around 1930 when it was extended to a full 18 hole course. The front 9 flows alongside the Indian ocean, with the back 9 set a little further back. However, all tees have a view of the Indian Ocean. The course also boasts the presence of the Hood Point lighthouse and is one of only 3 courses in SA with a working lighthouse in its midst. The West Bank cemetery is also within the course boundaries and is set beside the lighthouse. Several WW11 serviceman’s graves can be found within the cemetery.

The course has been recognised as “ a not to be missed opportunity “ by many who have played there, including many members of the Senior Golfers Union of South Africa who shared their annual national tournament with us, alongside ELGC, in May 2022. Recent rains have also been kind to us, and the course is currently in magnificent condition.

The signature 17th is a PAR 3 with an average distance of +-160m. Depending on the wind, club selection can be from 7 iron to a 3 fairway metal ( drivers have been known to be used with extreme southerly winds ). Generally the wind is across the hole, from east or west, with little protection. The green is raised apart from a +- 10m wide approach with run offs at the left, right and back. Best approach is from left to right, but again, that is dependent on the wind.

June to early November also offers views of visiting Humpback and Killer whales who visit the area to calf. So, when you’re in the Eastern Cape, or planning a golf tour, come and enjoy our hospitality, and “see the sea from every tee” ( the 19th also has a great view )!

The 18 hole course has a White Tee:  Par71 at 5782 m,  and the Red Tee: Par 73 at 5262m.
